Southern Illinois University School of Medicine
The Internal Medicine Division of Medicine/Psychiatry provides opportunities to work in both inpatient Internal Medicine and Inpatient Psychiatry services. We also have prime responsibility for the inpatient Consult Liaison Psychiatry service and outpatient service in the Med/Psych Clinic. A team of highly trained and skilled nurses and nurse techs with experience in both medical and psychiatric issues provide support to the division. The Division offers a 5-year Medicine/Psychiatry residency program with 2 slots per year. Currently there are 9 residents in various stages of training. The residents are excited, motivated physicians who go on to challenging fellowships, administrative roles and faculty positions at leading universities.
In the Spring of 2015, John Flack, MD, MPH joined Southern Illinois University SOM as the new Chair of Medicine. The new Chair of Psychiatry, Kari Wolf, MD, joined Southern Illinois University SOM in the Summer of 2016. Both Chairs strongly support the Med/Psych program and are actively building the departments of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at SIU SOM.
The Department of Psychiatry is expanding to provide telemedicine and school-based care in addition to, traditional inpatient, outpatient, ECT and TMS services. The Department offers a 4-year residency program with 4 slots per year, totaling 16 residents.

Springfield, IL is a charming Midwest community conveniently located in Central Illinois just 200 miles south of Chicago and approximately 90 miles north of St. Louis. The population of Springfield proper is 120,000 inhabitants, with an additional 125,000 in the surrounding communities. The city offers an excellent public school system as well as Lincoln Land Community College, the University of Illinois at Springfield and several technical and business schools. Recreation is abundant, with hiking, horseback riding and biking just minutes away. Boating, swimming and water skiing is seasonally available at beautiful lake Springfield, located on the southern outskirts of the city (15 min. from the medical center). There is a rich artistic community, as well as, several large theater groups. The Sangamon auditorium offers regularly scheduled operas, plays and symphonies. Transportation to and from Springfield could not be better. The city is conveniently located off I-55 which connects Springfield to both St. Louis and Chicago. The city operated airport services major carriers such as United Express and ATA. Additionally, the Amtrak station is located in the heart of the city, approximately 5 minutes from the medical center. Don't let Chicago's harsh winters alarm you, Springfield is not affected by the great lake effect, hence our local weather conditions are surprisingly pleasant.
